English Souvenir Picture Portfolio

Published by The Orphans' Printing Press, 10 & 12 Broad St.

1870's or 80's

7½" X 10"

16 Pictures: Leominster from Eaton Hill, Old Town Hall (now Grange Court), The Priory Church, Priory Church S.E., Priory Church Norman Door, Priory Church Norman Nave, Priory Church View across Nave, The Ducking Stool (with explanation), Priory Church from Mill Lane, Broad Street, High Street, The Chequers Inn Etnam Street (seen here in part), Drapers' Lane, Grange Court House (Old Town Hall), Oldest House (14th Century), Mortimers Cross - Battle Oak (with explanation)

Leominster (pronounced 'Lemster') is an historic market town dating to the 7th Century, located in beautiful countryside where England & Wales meet, & is named after Earl Leofric, the husband of Lady Godiva. Throughout the town there is a wide variety of architectural styles from the medieval overhangs in Drapers Lane & School Lane, to the Georgian splendour of Broad Street.

These fine examples include the 663 Priory Church, a very important religious centre in pre-Norman conquest times & formerly a monastery. Grange Court, built in 1633 by the King's carpenter John Abel, formerly sat at The Buttercross, on the junction of High & Broad Streets, serving as town hall with an open-air market beneath. It was moved to its current site in The Grange in 1856. The lower floor was enclosed, & today Grange Court houses local authority offices.

The Orphans Printing Press was established in 1873 by Henry Stanley Newman. The business was intended to generate monies to support the recently founded Leominster Orphans Homes, to provide industrial training for at least some of the orphans in its care, and to publish materials which would act as a force for good.

I.S.& E.U. Silver Jubilee Souvenir Booklet

Published in 1927, this souvenir of the printing trade, from Pittsburgh, Pa., chronicles the history of the International Stereotypers' and Electrotypers' Union of North America for the occasion of its 26th annual convention. The overall size is 8" x 11". Pictured are the Executive Board members: Keegan, Reynolds, Sumner, Apy & Crandall; members of the Locals #56 and 68; Ladies Joint Auxiliary; Soldiers Memorial & University of Pittsburgh buildings; statues of Thomas A. Armstrong & Steven C. Foster; H. J. Heinz main plant; Duquesne University; and Carnegie Institute. Articles include: Negotiation vs. Arbitration; Economics & Organized Labor; Law and Equity; The Apprentice & Technical Education; Efficiency and Cooperation with Our Employers; The Union Label and What It Stands For; Our Trade in Canada. There is also a plethora of interesting full, half & quarter-page ads, but we didn't want to break the binding or crease the pages trying to scan in pictures for you. Ads include all the latest innovations of the printer's and publisher's profession: presses, metal type, heating units, dry mats, and even the Taylor Co's. Wine Grape Juices! (Did the printer drink that while he worked?) The silver cover is showing a little wear, which is quite common with this type; our scanner has exaggerated the ripple effects. Pages 2 and 3 show some dirty fingerprinting at the very bottom, with the remainder of the inside pages being very clean; there are no tears. We rate this item's condition as 8.5 on a scale of 10.

Brochure sections not shown illustrate printed sales tools and ads, the factory, and "The Rockets of Radio City Music Hall", whom we know as the Rockettes, in their famous high kick line - Also included in the folder are one printed sheet and 4 1/2 mimeographed pages of instructions to the salesperson
